Up Chuk Duck (Pilot)
progress post #12

I haven't touched my pilot in 4 months. When I finally become disciplined and stop being a lazy good-for-nothing you will see it complete. But that won't be until the year 800 billion so here is another animated clip since I don't think any of you have time machines.

Up Chuk is having a cough attack:

On the 3rd screenschot, the bill/mouth look very out of perspective. There are a few other frames that have that same problem. I would have done that differently. But other than that, it's really good. How long is it so far?

I kinda see what he means. It seems like it would point more towards us. But hey, it's a cartoon. Have fun with it.

4 months?? What's up with you man?
Well keep up the good work. Try not to die before you finish it.

Also the last pic is really hilarious.

Come on. That's no explanation.

James. Ryan's just making a cartoony take here. His whole mouth is distorted. It's a little off center but that's so you can still see his eyes. These aren't like his previous drawings where he was going for realisim.

James said...

But, those few frames just don't look as solid as the others. If it was more solid it would all flow better, and look better in general.

It could still be just as cartoony, with that same priceless expression. It could be distorted, but still be solid. Like imagine a toy model of up chuck with that expression. The mouth would be different, and following some rule or pattern.

And Ryan, I'm not saying it's bad. It's actually quite good. More than good actually. I love these expressions here, and I know that's what you were really going for. It just needs some solidifying around the beak.

The year 800 billion you say? Shoot, that's when I planned my 'gap year'. Guess I'll just have to catch the repeat.

Big bong hit?

Nice dude..I like the inhale ribs and pectoral shot!

Love it. Especially when his whole body tenses up in anticipation. Really adds weight to how horrible the cough is.

And ducks have BILLS not beaks...

Fool.

Dude!
Fucking awesome clip ryan! I agree with Ryan G. that the ribs and pecs are funny.
The expressions are priceless. You are a great animator!

Great animation Ryan.
I love how people will look at this with a microscope.."Uh the third drawing where the microbe is.."
Shut up!!
You wish you could animate this goddamn funny!

Louis said...

Love how it's looking so far. Can't wait to see it finished.

By the way, does Up Chuck Duck ever speak in the cartoon? What does his voice sound like?

joshua wysocki said...

yippie!
great secondary action(?) with the stomach muscles tensing up like that!

thats like getting a pbj sandwich for 8 bucks!

Hey have you checked mistercoo.com latley? There's a bunch of new stuff.

smirkstudios said...

Nice work, as always! Your work in flash is much smoother than even that of John K's! There is no jerky motions, and not one frame was missed. What frame rate do you generally use, anyhow?

These people commenting about your "perspective issues" must be godly animators. Why else would they care, right?!

James said...

Bob Camp and SmirkStudios, Ryan is by far a better animator then me, but I think that it would go a lot smoother if they were changed, at least a little. The animation is so great, but those would be things I would change if I were him.

Bob, and that was something I noticed when I played it, before I looked at the frame grabs he posted. I do wish I could animate like that, but I was just merely giving a suggestion to Ryan to make it even better.

No worries James, you were just trying to help out.

Arthur Filloy said...

Mate,

As a 30 year 2-d veteran and a perfectionist, I could not fault you animation on this sequence.
The timing is tops, secondary action, torso, everything just works brilliantly. Don't listen to the shmoes, if there are so many experts out there how come modern animation sucks. Keep up the excellent work,
It doesn't matter if you never finish it as long as you get your practice.

Bob Camp said...

Hey forget it James. I was just messing with you:) I can't animate like. I wish the hell I could!
It passes the laugh test for sure!

Hey Arthur Filloy!
PLEASE get in touch with me!!
I'm not hard to find if you want to.

James said...

Yeah, Bob, it's hard to recognize sarcasm on the web.

Bob Camp said...

Sorry James. I'm not that much of a hard core animation freak. I'm really into the comedy and Ryan here has that is spades! And I'm a big teaser and have been known to be sarcastic. I think your enthusiasm for Ryan's work is really a good thing!
Peace brother.

Hey Ryan. John K stopped by spumboard and I asked him what happened between you two and he said

"Nothin' on my end. He drank a lot of free beers at my parties an then argued with all the professonals and went kinda psycho after.

Some people just aren't very grateful I guess.

I guess I gotta be careful who I'm nice to from now on."

hey everyone thanks for the super nice and awesome comments, i really appreciate all of them =)

louis: UC never speaks in the pilot, but he will in all of the other episodes (the pilot's story doesn't really require any dialogue from him). i'm not yet certain what i want his voice to sound like.

anon#5: no i had actually sort of forgotten about mr. coo, thanks for the reminder!!

Well, I'm not really gonna get involved, being that I don't really know John, but whenever I talked to him on aim, or through his blog, he was always friendly, and eager to help to help me out. But, I don't personally know the guy, never talked to him in person, so I don't know. But I don't think I would say Mighty Mouse is the best thing he worked on. In my opinion Comic Book is. Then Big House Blues, and a few other 1st/2nd season episodes. Might mouse is somewhere in 3rd for me.

yeah, I never really had trouble with john either. hes opinionatedd but never ha d trouble with himm

Blah blah blah John K blah blah blah. Who gives a fuck if anyone likes or dislikes him? Take it to Spumboard or some shit.

Ryan this looks fantastic, really smooth animation. The inhale drawing is phenomenal. You need to get yo ass back to work on this.

Rick Roberts said...

"But that won't be until the year 800 billion"

Nah man, you are talking about The George Liquor Program. :P

Anyway, I love this pencil test. Why don't studio's do this shit anymore ? These cartoons cost like 6 million bones and they refuse to even make something as simple as a cough look this funny. Someday I imagine us artists will rise up and just burn hollywood down. After the Three Stooges remake I heard about, the time has come to gather the kerosene and torches.

I think it will happen. The economic crisis will force hollywood to give up their uninspired expensive digital effects and make people rely on creativity again.

Look at this kids flashes, ryan. he thinks he's you. he stole a stick figure style that you worked so hard developing.

"James, obviously what you think is his best thing is a matter of opinion."

It's more a matter of opinion which is your personal preference, however, it's not a matter of opinion that the original Ren & Stimpy poOps over [Bakshi's] Mighty Mouse from a great height. That's a fact Jack. I think most people [including John] would agree on that. Doesn't mean you can't like your Mighty Mouse.

smirkstudios said...

"FUCK John K"

Er... no thanks. I know it's the new hip thing to do among the youths, but I think I'll pass on that one. Joking aside, you did come off as a jerk. John has the same rights as everyone else on their websites to come off as smug as they feel. He is using it [like many others use theirs] for self-promotion after all. I think the major problem though is related to him being very opinionated and expressing those opinions quite freely. Nothing wrong with that in itself at all - the issue lies more with his 'do as I say, not as I do' attitude. What I mean is he'll tell you exactly where [he thinks] people are going wrong with their work [and lives], but then he does those very things himself. There are many examples of this type of things from him, but as a quickie I'll draw your attention to what seems to be his latest crusade. That is, referring to independent cartoon animators as 'a bunch of kids messing about in Flash in their bedrooms' - I'm paraphrasing there. Now whilst I'm sure there are many such examples of those kids, he is quick to dismiss all independents by lumping them into the lowest common denominator. But then John gets himself a copy of Flash to do his latest cartoons on. Has John joined a studio? Nah, he's pretty much an independent [Spumco is defunct in all but name only - he admits this himself, that he's working with 'part-timers']. Even his idea that independents don't collaborate is off the mark. Anyway, that's just one example of many. *parp*

And Kevin Langley, it's more his fanbots who 'gives a shit who likes or dislikes him', as they tend to turn against those who have an opinion against John or his ideas, as was witnessed by the 180's taken by those had previously basked [HAHA] in Ryan's friendship. I can see your frustration with the issue being brought up again [like a mac vs pc argument], however you should scroll up and read the comment posted on spunkboard. The ostrich has firmly planted its head in the sand, it would seem. Is that a good thing, that Ryan is now being held responsible [yet again] for someone else's deeds? Would you want to associate yourself with such a drunken ingrate?

James said...

Hey Crisp, by far I think Ren and Stimpy were funnier than Mighty Mouse. I think it was also much more creative. But, I like the look of Bakshi's Mighty Mouse because of the over look, the inking, the colors, the little things. That's also the stuff that makes Big House Blues look great. Big House Blues is great because it has all those things.

But any way this a stupid thing to argue over, especially since it's so damn of topic.

James said...

Ohh and crsp, John did early stuff in the late 90's with flash, before any "independent" animators. But the reason I think John said that is because you learn more from working with a crew. It's not all one "style" but rather an actual cartoon. But don't get me wrong, I've seen plenty of beautiful stuff made by one person, like Ryan's stuff for example.

I'm also working on a short right now with a "small crew" if you will, but it is still considered independent, and it's turning out far better with our individual insight on it, than if we did it alone.

smirkstudios said...

OK, guys, I get it. I for some reason thought it would be ok to have an opinion and a perspective, but I went a little too far into a very dramatized and touchy subject. Once again I openly appologize, and Kevin Langley was right. Me and all you other people who have such a passion for NOTHING should have taken these to SpumBoard instead of spamming up Ryan's comment board. Sorry everyone.

Really good job on this, Ryan! I really felt that cough and how the body retracts like that showing bones and muscles is great!

Don't worry man, I too fall behind on my stuff all the time. As long as you are driven to doing what you love then that's all you really need. You are by far one of the best cartoon animators out there! Best of luck on this and I hope to see it finished!

P.S. Don't listen to the nitpickers (Sorry James). It's good to learn about little things like that to better yourself as an artist, but I feel like it really is all about quality not quantity.

Ryan, This is Fan-freaking-tastic dude! That cough looks downright painful and funny at the same time. I gotta say, having worked in an animation sweat shop for the past 3 years, my motivation for working on my own stuff was tapped. But this has brought back some spark! kickass job!

Grrrrreat stuff, Ryan. very smooth and fun animation. that last frame is freaking hilarious, but so is the whole animation. keep going dude
